Paint Horse

Nash Final.png

I don’t think I could ever get tired of drawing horses. Not surprisingly, I get asked if I love horses. While I do love horses, and love horseback riding, it is not just the animal itself that I love.

The horse embodies the spirit of freedom. The horse embodies the wild passion that runs deep in all of us. The horse is the vehicle that ties us to the earth, and helps us to understand how to treat others in this world.

This drawing of a palomino paint horse named Nash belongs to one of my trusted collectors. It was a pleasure and an honor to draw such a beautiful horse.

Hummingbirds in the Garden

Black-Chinned HummerSometimes there are wonderful stories behind a drawing, and this was one of those drawings.

Early this spring, 2014, we had the most amazing hummingbird grace our backyard. Our backyard is blessed (and cursed) with amazingly beautiful trumpet flowers. They range in color from yellow to red and all of the colors in between.

The cardinals seem to love the flowers when they turn red. The bees seem to love the flowers as soon as they sprout. And the hummingbirds seem to love them throughout the spring and into the beginning of summer.

While I’m accustomed to see the hummingbirds with the green backs, this one hummingbird kept appearing and was quite different in appearance. Only after discussing this with an avid hummingbird aficionado did I realize that we were looking at a Native Texan.

Below is the difference…

Who Dat?

Angus cows…

Who Dat FinalAs a graphite pencil artist, there is nothing exciting about black Angus cattle. So to make it look like something more than just a black blob is quite difficult.

I think I succeeded in bringing character and life to this little guy.

American Bison

“Call of the Wild” Graphite Drawing by Geri Dunn
Call of the Wild

The American Bison is a symbol of our culture, when the West was once wild and untamed, and these magnificent beasts would spend the warm hours of the day resting, chewing its cud or wallowing in dirt.

Females and young males may live in groups of up to 20 bison. Males also can live in groups of up to 20 males, or they can live in smaller groups or individually. Mature males and females usually live apart except during breeding season.

It is during the breeding season that one might have the best opportunity to hear these big guys bellow. When a female runs through a group of males, the males often respond by bellowing and fighting each other.  While one may think that the loudest bellows impresses the ladies, researchers actually think the low deep rumbling bellow wins the girl every time.

This completed Graphite Drawing is available. Completed size is 12 x 16.

Exploring Texas

The Rolling Hills of Clifton, Texas

Today we made the day trip into Clifton, Texas to drop off some artwork for the Bosque Museum show. Exploring the back roads in and out of Clifton it is no wonder that Clifton is becoming a popular tourist destination. Clifton is that rare small town gem which seems to offer a little bit of everything for those wishing to leave the stress of city life for a relaxing, fun-filled time in a nostalgic country setting.

As for entertainment, Clifton has been called one of the “100 best small art towns in America,” and is known throughout the south for is its diverse art colony. Clifton is home to the Bosque Art Center, one of the finest community art complexes in the state. The Art Center boasts an impressive permanent collection of art, a live theater, photography exhibits, a multitude of classes, and special offerings.

For the outdoorsman and hunter in the family, Bosque County offers a multitude of wildlife and game ranches teaming with deer, birds, and exotics. The camper and fisherman need look no further than nearby Meridian Lake, Lake Whitney, or the Bosque and Brazos Rivers.

Clifton is only 30 minutes away from Waco and midway between Dallas/Fort Worth and Austin at the top of the beautiful Texas Hill Country… Just perfect for a day trip!

Yellowstone National Park

Buffalo at sunset, Midway Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. For anyone wanting to embrace Nature, Yellowstone National Park has to be one of the most popular destinations.

For me, Yellowstone is the National Park that I long to experience. I see such wonderful photos taken of this magical place. Incredibly beautiful sunsets. Awe-inspiring waterfalls, geysers and rivers. Massive Bison, Majestic Elk and the unknown just around the bend.

It’s no wonder that Yellowstone History has been occupied for over 11,000 years. And it’s certainly not a mystery that in 1872 Yellowstone was nominated as the first National Park.
